2025 MTG Releases & More
2025 was a massive year for Magic: The Gathering, with seven releases that added tons of unique mechanics, stunning world-building, and exciting Commander decks to their respective universes. Let’s take a look back to review the 2025 MTG releases and explore what’s ahead for 2026 MTG releases here.
1. January | Innistrad Remastered

Innistrad: Remastered is unique because it did not introduce any new mechanics to the game. Instead, it focused exclusively on existing cards. As a reprint, it included cards that weren’t part of the original Innistrad decks.
2. February | Aetherdrift

The cards in Aetherdrift introduce exciting Legendary options, fresh mechanics, and change up the color archetypes in Limited. If you’re looking for something inventive, innovative, and entertaining, give this set a chance.
3. April | Tarkir: Dragonstorm

With an incredibly rich universe, Tarkir: Dragonstorm was a return to a plane we hadn’t seen in ten years. Three-color dragons and clans were the headline for this 2025 MTG release, along with revised mechanics and new aesthetics.
4. June | Final Fantasy

The first crossover of the year, the Final Fantasy release, was pretty close to the traditional MTG universe. It featured many of the traditional mechanics you get in the original game, which made gameplay seem effortless. While there were some balance concerns, like with Vivi Ornitier, and some unstable pricing that made accessibility difficult, this was still one of the most popular releases of the year.
5. August | Edge of Eternities

Notably one of the most fun and cohesive 2025 MTG releases, Edge of Eternities brought us mechanics, worldbuilding, and a Limited environment that worked together harmoniously. As a space-based set, this release definitely felt like a test run for the 2026 MTG release of the MTG and Star Trek™ crossover. With so many creative legends and beautiful full-art lands, this release made a major impact.
6. September | Marvel’s Spider-Man

Many people felt that this 2025 MTG release didn’t quite match the power and creativity of the other sets released this year. However, there were some cool things to explore with the Spider-Man release, including some Commanders and a few archetype roleplay options.
7. November | Avatar: The Last Airbender
From the Limited and design point of view, Avatar truly delivered an amazing experience. Players felt like the mechanics, including the elemental bending system, were fresh and intuitive. There was also a lot of nostalgia tied to this 2025 MTG release, and seeing these characters come to life in full-art cards was a triumph.
2026 MTG Releases
Now that we’ve covered the 2025 MTG releases, we can start looking ahead to what 2026 has in store! Check out the 2026 MTG release schedule here.
1. January | Lorwyn Eclipsed

First up in 2026 is another nostalgia set that originally came out 18 years ago. The plane of Lorwyn is full of unique characters, including boggarts, elementals, treekin, and kithkin, and this set introduces some brand new cards, like the two-color flip Gods Eirdu and Isilu.
2. March | Universes Beyond Set | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The official unveiling of this set was scheduled for October 2025, when MTG revealed that the Ninja Turtles were the highly anticipated crossover. These Heroes in a Half Shell will deliver a main set, legal in every format, an Eternal-legal subset, and source material cards featuring reprints with TMNT art. Expect more spoilers in February.
3. April | Secrets of Strixhaven
Part of the Magic Multiverse, this release is a follow-up to the 2021 journey to the Arcavios plane. There are very few details available about this release, but we know that there will be an accompanying novel titled Strixhaven: Omens of Chaos.
4. June | Marvel Super Heroes
For a partnership with Marvel, a superhero-based set is inevitable. With this MTG release, we definitely expect to see the most iconic characters in this universe, in addition to rumors about completely new Secret Lair cards. The narrative clearly seems to revolve around the Silver Age storyline with cards like The Coming of Galactus, Doom Reigns Supreme, and Thunderbolts Conspiracy.
5. August | The Hobbit™
This new release is joining an existing set from this universe: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth. We expect The Hobbit set to feature Bilbo Baggins and all his dwarven friends, but details are currently limited.
6. October | Reality Fracture
For this Magic Multiverse release, there isn’t much known yet. However, Mark Rosewater, MTG Head Designer, has shared that we should expect never-before-seen features.
7. November | Star Trek™
The final 2026 MTG release, Star Trek, is designed to expand on the Edge of Eternities release from 2025. You’ll be warping your way across galaxies with your favorite characters and ships from the original television series.
