What’s in the New Final Fantasy MTG Set?

Introduction

Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy fans unite! Wizards of the Coast has announced the next major MTG set. If the phrase “Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy Cards” gets you as excited as it does us, you’re in for a treat. Drawing from the entire series of sixteen games, the set promises exciting art, fun new mechanics, competitive elements, and must-have collector items. Dive into everything that has been announced so far to see what you can anticipate in the Final Fantasy set.

Final Fantasy MTG Cards Lore Summary

With 16 games of content, the lore runs deep. While the full content of the set has not been announced just yet, Wizards has made clear that the most popular characters, items, and locations will make appearances as Final Fantasy MTG cards.

Major Characters

Wizards has already announced some fan favorites, including Cloud, Sephiroth, Tifa, Tidus, Terra, and Y’shtola. With more than 100 legendary creature cards, we can all expect many more familiar names.

Some more exciting announcements show that the set has favorite non-playable characters and pieces of lore. So far, Shiva, a legendary summon from the game, will be in the set. You can also find a number of entries for chocobos, cactuars, moogles, and more.

Wizards says that every Final Fantasy game will be represented. So while you can certainly find Final Fantasy X MTG cards and the most popular items, hidden gems will abound across the set.

The Expanded Worlds

Beyond characters and creatures from the Final Fantasy worlds, there are Easter eggs throughout the new set. The Sidequest: Catch a Fish references the fishing mini-game from FFXV. Many more Final Fantasy MTG cards will reference major and minor events across the storylines.

Story Arc Recap

Each commander deck will tell a story from a different game. The four announced commander decks focus on Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14. The decks allow you to relive moments from each of the games while building new stories with your favorite characters, enemies, and lore.

Commander Deck

There are four commander decks in the Final Fantasy MTG set.

Scions & Spellcraft pulls from Final Fantasy XIV. Y'shtola, Night's Blessed commands the white-blue-black deck. The combination should work well to showcase ability usage.

Counter Blitz draws from Final Fantasy X, commanded by Tidus. This white-blue-green deck focuses on counters, blending expectations for lovers of both MTG and FF. This sets the stage for Final Fantasy X MTG fusions.

Revival Trance is based on Final Fantasy VI. Led by Terra, it’s a white-black-red reanimator deck. Lots of milling and returning in this one.

Limit Break revisits the world and story of Final Fantasy VII. Cloud commands this white-red-green deck that showcases iconic weapons and battle actions.

Mechanics

One of the biggest announcements of the set is the inclusion of new game mechanics. Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy cards reimagine some old mechanics like double-faced cards and sagas in new ways.

Saga creatures fuse the legendary summons of the Final Fantasy universe with MTG gameplay. A Saga creature enters with a single lore counter, which nets an immediate effect, but they only stay for a few turns.

Double-faced cards simulate character progression in the Final Fantasy games. A double-faced creature can fulfill conditions to change into an alternative, leveled-up form.

The Sidequest mechanic uses the transform mechanism. A Sidequest card has a set of actions you can take. Depending on the outcomes, the card will transform. As an example, Sidequest: Catch a Fish allows you to look at the top card. If it’s an artifact or creature, you can put it in your hand. If you do, create a Food tone and transform the enchantment.

That’s the only Sidequest card announced so far, but it shows how fun mechanics can fuse gameplay ideas into Final Fantasy MTG cards.

Final Fantasy MTG Cards for Collectors

Without full release announcements, there are certainly some surprise collector elements waiting around the corner. What Wizards has told the world is that there are more than 100 legendary creature cards and 55 borderless cards. The borderless design is intended to show off some gorgeous art of some of the most beloved characters in video game history.

Needless to say, early buzz centers on the few art releases we’ve seen, including Cloud, Sephiroth, Tidus, Tifa, and Yuna. While only Shiva has been shown at this point, many collectors are anticipating some draw-dropping summons that celebrate Ifrit, Bahamut, and the rest of the FF summons.

Perhaps most exciting are the still-unannounced Final Fantasy MTG cards that are sure to capture our attention with the full release.

Final Notes

Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy cards constitute a major announcement for fans of both franchises. With commander decks and a standard-legal set, it’s going to shake up the game for sure. Considering the international popularity of Final Fantasy and the fact that this is essentially a brand-new art set based on the series, collectors are excited.

We’ll revisit the set when the full release is available and get into some of the finer details of deck building and collecting. Stay tuned!
