Welcome to my weekly comic book oriented article here at Flipside Gaming. Last week we saw a lot of the Secret Empire books start to roll towards the finish line. This week we get the first Generations book and a literal cartoon helps Deadpool and Spider-Man be, uhhh, more serious! So, without any further delay, here we go! Excelsior!
Reviews
Captain America: Sam Wilson #24
Secret Empire is winding down and all of the pieces are starting to take their positions for the final battle against Hydra. This issue is not essential per se, but if you like Sam Wilson that you are really going to enjoy this book. Between Misty laying into him and the new Patriot’s heart to heart talk, Sam really takes a look inward and realizes becoming Captain America is less about him and more about the people.
Deadpool #34
I think of all the changes coming with Legacy/Generations, Deadpool becoming a villain again is going to be the one that upsets me the most. It is issues like this that make me think that he is better served as an anti-hero, just doing whatever crazy plot comes to his mind. There are some powerful moments in this issue that will have repercussions after Secret Empire, so if you get one issue of the tie-in material, this is the book to get.
The Mighty Captain Marvel #7
Just as Sam Wilson is preparing to be Captain America on the ground, Alpha Flight and Sword are preparing to take down the shield around the Earth. This issue was less about Carol and more about the people that work for her. There was a cool moment for the Guardians of the Galaxy to return to save the day in a manner of speaking and a splash page that would be a really cool desktop wallpaper. I am ready for the good guys to converge on Hydra and bring this event to a close.
Secret Empire #7
I really enjoyed this issue even though it kind of completely negated Ulysses from Civil War. Spider-man is able to prove he is not a killer even right after Captain America has killed Black Widow. With most of the Champions being taken into custody and the other heroes feeling the pain from Natasha’s death, this is the storm before calm. While this almost guarantees that there will be a recon due to Cosmic Cube shenanigans, the image of her falling was definitely staggering.
Previews
Avengers #10
This is one of those issues that will tie up some loose ends as Secret Empire is starting to wrap up. We get to see how the current group of Avengers, Superior Octopus, Taskmaster, Deadpool, Vision, and Scarlet Witch all got brought together and why they would fight for Hydra. Some of this has already been fleshed out but I am interested in seeing some of the finer details.
Generations Banner Hulk & Totally Awesome Hulk #1
This is the first Generations storyline to come out. I have to assume this comes out after Secret Empire has ended so I would be careful of heavy spoilers. This teases a conflict between the 2, but the last time they were together everything was easy going so I don’t see a reason why that would really change. For a character killed off, the Hulk really has been everywhere recently.
Spider-Man/Deadpool #20
Spider-man is trying to take his crime fighting more seriously, but with Deadpool on one side and the literal cartoon character Slapstick on the other, how is he going to pull this off? With the reveal of a long thought dead character being alive, I am sure there will be interesting plot points and twists in the latter parts of the story.
X-Men Gold #9
This looks like another book that might be after Secret Empire. I am not really sure what it is going to be about other than Kitty Pryde trying to avoid characters named Peter. No really, that is what the synopsis of the book is. I am sure it will touch on the X-Cutioner’s return and the fact that several mutants were killed and Colossus was nearly one of them.
