Description

The original E-100 design called for an incredibly powerful 15cm gun, but the proven reliability of the 12.8cm gun meant that the plans were put on hold. When the German High Command began the development of the E-100 they also began work on completing the designs for the heavier gun, having seen the new IS-3 tanks driving down the streets of Berlin only a few years earlier.

This new gun, much like the rest of then E-100 project, was re-developed under a close veil of security as the nation could not afford to have their Soviet neighbours, or American and British “allies”, raising concerns about the return of a powerful German Army that was equipped with not just the best tanks and guns of World War II, but super-weapons.

Heavy Rounds
The shells used in the 15cm gun could penetrate up to 200mm of armour out to a range of 4 kilometres but were also so heavy that a team of two loaders were also required to slowly manhandle the heavy rounds in to the breech of the gun.

Weak Flank
The E-100, like many German designs of this type, featured impressive armour on the front of the tank, designed to allow it to stand up to plenty of abuse. The side armour, whilst impressive for a World War II tank was considerably weaker and vulnerable to fast moving medium tanks.
