30th Anniversary of Pokémon TCG

Pokemon TCG 30th Anniversary Review

On February 27th, Pokémon Presents hosted a live showcase of everything you can expect for the coming year. While this presentation included the release of new video games and shows, at Flipside Gaming, we like to focus on trading card game news.

With the Pokémon 30th anniversary coming up, there was a ton of big news, including updates to the Red and Blue Version Game Music Collection, Pokémon Champions’ launch in April 2026, and new Mega Evolutions in the Legends ZA Mega Dimension DLC. But let’s turn our attention to trading cards. Check out the sneak peeks we were given during the livestream.

Teaser Cards

The Pokémon 30th anniversary release details were pretty vague during the review, but we did see some hints on what to expect, including highlighted classic cards and throwback Tag Team cards. The cards and collection were not named, but featured card images from a variety of generations, including original base cards from 1995! Take a look at the Pokémon TCG 30th anniversary cards that were featured.

1. Pikachu Base Card

    1995 pikachu base classic card

This release from the 1995 Base Set is a Type 2 Base card that’s categorized as Uncommon. Decent HP and serious damage from Thunder Jolt make the risk of landing on tails absolutely worth it! And who can resist the adorable art that shows Pikachu in a slightly rounder form than the sleeker modern versions?

2. Charizard

This 1999 Charizard card, shown in the Pokémon 30th anniversary stream, brought back a ton of memories. It’s a high-ticket card in any language, but this image featured the German translation for Charizard as Glurak, meaning “Ember Dragon.” Did you know that since this Charizard card features the same HP and damage across all versions, the German version is tournament-legal for Play! Pokémon?

3. Palkia + Lugia

A bit more confusing during the Pokémon 30th anniversary stream was the seeming combination of the Spanish Palkia card with the Japanese Lugia card. What could this pairing of the water and psychic/flying type mean? Furthermore, the Japanese Lugia card is considered a Holy Grail by many fans because it’s so rare, but the Palkia looks like regular card art without any holographic or specialty finish. Both are incredibly nostalgic cards released in the early 2000s.

4. Uxie

  uxie card

The next card reveal was from the Legends Awakened expansion. Uxie, considered by many to be overpowered, is a popular card that allows you to draw a ton of cards or reorganize the bottom of your deck. Featuring this card in French continues to highlight the global awareness and reach of the Pokémon 30th anniversary stream.

5. Genesect + Solgaleo

Genesect EX card Solgaleo GX card

From the EX and GX series, respectively, this reveal also implied a mashup of some sort between these two cards. Massive HP stats and pretty crazy damage have made both Genesect EX and Solgaleo GX highly valued cards. While not the highest HP a Pokémon card has ever featured (that honor goes to the Mega Venasaur EX with 380), the Solgaleo GX is pretty high up there. Maybe we’ll be seeing new cards with even higher HP in 2026 releases.

6. Four-Card Lineup

The final single cards featured during the Pokémon TCG 30th anniversary livestream were these four sets:

  • Arceus VSTAR: Released as part of the Sword & Shield Promo Cards, it has a super-strong attack that lets you accelerate Energy cards to help set up your next Arceus.
  • Zacian: A Sword & Shield card, this Zacian appears to be the holographic version of the card translated into Korean.
  • Pikachu + Zekrom Tag Team: From the Sun & Moon Series, this version of the Pikachu and Zekrom Team Up card was illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita. Are Team Up expansions in the works? We’ll see this year!
  • Raikou: One of the Amazing Pokémon from the Vivid Voltage expansion, this Raikou features Amazing Shot that uses three different energy types.
