Story Arc Recap

Edge of Eternities makes up the third and final arc of the Metronome storyline. This set introduces the Edge, a region outside the multiverse. It borders the blind eternities, making it a key place for action and adventure.

With advanced tech and cosmic power, the Sothera system is the seat of power in the Edge, with different factions fighting for control and influence over the system.

As these forces struggle for power, players can discover what lies at the heart of the galaxy.

Commander Decks

Magic: The Gathering Edge of Eternities
features two prebuilt Commander decks. The first, Counter Intelligence, is red, white, and blue. The second, World Shaper, is black, red, and green.

World Shaper plays around land sacrifices. The ship artifact can draw cards by sacrificing land, and the deck is filled with additional effects that sacrifice land or utilize the rapidly filled graveyard.

Counter Intelligence, as the name suggests, uses charge counters to generate power. Artifact synergies progressively build board presence and effects through charge counters, drawing cards, controlling the board, and more.

Both decks offer power and fun in their play, with plenty of room for tweaking and optimization.

Strategy

If you wanted to summarize
Magic: The Gathering Edge of Eternities in a single word, it might be “fast.” Based on prerelease events, Edge of Eternity looks like it’s bringing in a speedier format. We’ll have to see how the meta shifts over time, but with landfall, charge counter support, and new mechanics, decks are able to push harder and faster compared to many other metas.

In general, you want to pick your strategy and steer into it. Draw, mana building, and recursion are abundantly available, allowing you to push tempo, commit to board, and potentially respond to strong turns.

Whether or not you prefer faster metas, one thing is for sure. You’ll be able to get more games in a lot sooner with the set compared to some of the more recent additions to the game.

Mechanics

Magic: The Gathering Edge of Eternities
is shaking up game mechanics in a few fun ways.

First, a new mechanic revolves around spacecraft and stations. The mechanic is called the Spacecraft, which is an artifact subtype. Spacecraft cards feature the new Station mechanic introduced in this set. How does that work? You can tap creatures, and their power creates charge counters for the Spacecraft to reach a threshold. Once that quota is met, it becomes an artifact creature.

Alongside spacecraft and station, a brand new mechanic warp is being introduced as well. Warp allows you to cast a spell at a reduced cost, but the permanent is exiled at the end of the turn. However, warp does allow you to cast that spell again on a later turn from exile if you'd like. This mechanic is reminiscent of both adventure and evoke, so it will surely add a ton of decisions to play with.

In Commander, a new rule allows legendary cards with printed power and toughness to be a commander. This caters to Vehicles, as well as the new legendary Spacecrafts, providing additional incentive to play and power them.

Beyond those new mechanics, Shock lands are back. As a reminder, these lands come in untapped if you pay two life. You can accelerate faster and open up new avenues to your gameplay.

Lastly, the Landfall mechanic is back, sparking some aggressive play options that keep things moving in interesting ways.

What’s in the Cards

Magic Edge of Eternities
offers a ton of new art, generating plenty of early buzz in the community. A handful of heavily featured cards dominate prerelease conversations, with plenty of fun discoveries left to be made when the set goes live.

First are the borderless Stellar Sights lands. Available in both non-foil and traditional foil, they harken back to previous Magic sets that explore the night’s sky. The Stellar Sights have poster versions exclusive to the Collector Boosters. These cards include: Gemstone Caverns, Echoing Deeps, High Market, and Needle Spires.

You’ll also find Shock lands and planets. These Borderless viewport lands give you a new perspective for Magic: The Gathering Edge of Eternities. Also available in non-foil and traditional foil variants, you can find these in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters.

Rounding out the big buzz content are the Special Guests cards. The set includes 10 special guests that draw inspiration from classic science-fantasy novels. The art resembles book covers, and they are available as non-foil in Play Boosters and traditional foil in Collector Boosters.

For Collectors

Plenty of cards will gather attention in the new
Magic Edge of Eternities set, but at the prerelease stage, there are three chase cards that stand at the top of the heap.

Tezzeret, Cruel Captain, is a low-cost, colorless, powerful planeswalker that works great with artifact strategies.

Sothera, the Supervoid, is the flagship card and the story’s centerpiece. As a mythic enchantment, it provides powerful sacrifice engine play.

Finally, The Seriema is the heroes’ ship. As a legendary Spacecraft, it can become a commander and offers plenty of utility in play.

Final Notes

Magic: The Gathering Edge of Eternities
is a big set with a lot of fun ideas, inspired new art, great story, and endless fun in store for veterans and newcomers alike. Whether you go all in on prerelease content, dive in with drafts/sealeds, or collect at your own pace, you’re sure to find plenty of entertainment.
