Description

Britain was horrified when they saw the 1945 Victory parades in Berlin when the IS-3 tank was first unveiled.   This was a harbinger of heavy metal Soviet tank design and worried the British Army immensely.

Already in the pipeline was the Centurion as a priority, backed up by the Tortoise as a heavy tank destroyer, but this wasn’t going to be enough. Britain already had hundreds of Cromwell tanks in service and looked to upgrade these as its 75mm gun would be worthless against the latest generations of Soviet armour.

Britain’s answer was to design a whole new turret that was fitted with the powerful new 20 pounder gun. Despite armour of only 37mm in parts, the turret proved to be an excellent stop gap to make the Cromwell chassis competitive in the new post-war era.

Horsepower
Much like the original Cromwell, the Charioteer boasts a Rolls-Royce Meteor V12 petrol engine with 600 horsepower giving it a speed of 40 mph (64 km/h). This added speed gives it an edge over most other enemy tanks, letting it easily outflank enemies.

Old Dog, New Tricks
The Charioteer cannot operate like the Cromwell did in World War II where its armour could stop enemy 75mm rounds. Instead it needs to use its speed to quickly move around the battlefield avoiding enemy fire and positioning itself in a safe position where it can rain fire down on the flank of an unsuspecting enemy.
